It can handle it all with a custom hockey stick holder that stretches from the trunk forward, in between the seats.

The power play continues inside as the rear bench seat has been converted to two bucket seats with custom upholstery and there are custom-molded sports bottle drink holders in the center console. Rubberized flooring in the front and rear seating areas simulates the surface found outside the rink, and the action continues off the ice TVs mounted in the front seat headrests wired to a Microsoft® Xbox video game console featuring EA Sports NHL12 video game.

The Kia Forte 5-door is finished with custom ice-metallic gray exterior paint, 18-inch blue alloy wheels, a custom body kit, and Forte Koup front bumper with carbon fiber accents and LED "hockey stick" fog lights, quad-tipped exhaust, carbon fiber roof material and lowered suspension.

The headliner features a built-in hockey coach's play board and the locker room-like rear cargo area features built-in compartments that house four carbon fiber hockey sticks and two jerseys color matched to the exterior of the car, an ice skate rack and glove hooks to dry out sweaty game-used equipment, and custom accent lighting.

Defensive Driving Tips

Do you want to make sure you're prepared on the road? Then here are eight defensive driving tips, courtesy of GM and the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving:

Adjust your set properly and sit upright. This enables your body to feel and sense what the car is telling you.
It's important to scan the entire driving environment during normal driving conditions. However, consider that you'll tend to go where you'll look at.
Be smooth with your steering, acceleration and braking to keep the car balanced. Think of the gas pedal and brake pedal as a sponge. Squeezing the brake controls weight transfer to the front of the car, compresses the springs and shocks, and expands the contact patchiness your front tires make with the road, thus increasing front tire traction. If you're abrupt with the brakes, especially while turning, you may lose control.
When driving on curves, drive at reasonable speed, which means that you may need to drive slower than the posted speed limit. Always take a middle-to-late apex. The apex is the are where your car is closest to the inside edge of the road during a turn. When you're getting off the freeway, at that point you are halfway around the exit ramp. If you do that and are going even just a little too fast, halfway around the exit, centrifugal force could cause you to lose control.
Trail the brakes. Trailing the brakes means to ease off the brake pedal slowly as you turn into a corner. It keeps the weight on your front steering tires, creating more traction for the turn.
Elevate your vision. Things come at you fast when you look only at the car in front of you. Look 10 to 15 cars ahead and you'll find that everything comes at you more slowly and more predictably.
Remember to always turn the wheels in the direction you are skidding to bring the car under control. If you have a skid, ease off the throttle in all situations to transfer the weight back onto the front steering tires.
Enjoy driving your car. Don't overstep your limits or the road conditions.

Chevy Speeds Up Volt Rollout As Demand Increases

Chevrolet is stepping up the national rollout of the Volt to match customer interest.

"We're accelerating our launch plan to have Volts in all participating Chevrolet dealerships in every single state in the union by the end of this year," said Rick Scheidt, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. "This is the right thing to do for our customers and our dealers who are seeing increased traffic onto their showroom floors."

Chevrolet Volts have been delivered to customers in the Washington D.C. area, as well as California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Texas. Customer deliveries in Michigan begin this spring.

Customers nationwide will be able to order Volts with participating dealers beginning in the second quarter. Deliveries will begin in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii in the third quarter.

During the fourth quarter, Chevrolet expects to deliver Volts in all 50 states.

The All-New Subaru FB Engine

The 2011 Subaru Forester non-turbocharged models are powered by four-cylinder Subaru FB engine. The FB is the first completely new engine from Subaru in 20 years. Here are the details:

More specifically, the non-turbocharged Forester engine is the FB25. The 25 nomenclature refers to its displacement of 2.5 liters.

The engine’s design and the development of its components and systems are intended to improve both economy and performance. Comparisons in this article are made with the four-cylinder EJ25 engine that previously powered Forester models.

BASIC DESIGN

The FB engine’s bore and stroke are both different from the EJ’s. The comparison chart below shows a smaller bore and longer stroke. A longer stroke helps to improve fuel efficiency.

Despite the longer stroke, engineers were able to maintain the dimensions of the EJ engine with revisions to connecting rods and valvetrain components. Maintaining engine width was a concern in designing the FB power plant. The new engine was required to fit in the same-sized engine bay as its predecessor.

The change in the combustion chamber’s displacement and surface area helps to reduce engine knock.

CYLINDER HEADS/CAM CARRIERS

The cylinder heads and the camshaft carriers consist of separate pieces instead of one metal casting. That allows a reduction in metal thickness, simplification of the engine’s structure, and reduction in weight.

Revisions to the valvetrain include the use of roller rocker arms instead of lifters to actuate valves. These components and their layout contribute to reducing the width of the cylinder heads and overall engine width.

The fuel injectors were moved to the cylinder heads. In the EJ engine, they were mounted in the intake manifolds. The relocation enhances the flow of atomized fuel, helping to improve fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust gas emissions.

INTAKE AND EXHAUST

Both intake and exhaust systems are designed to optimize the flow of gases and improve performance.

In the intake system, the intake manifold no longer requires a large intake chamber, which reduces the number of parts in the engine. The size and shape of the large and small resonators along the intake manifold are streamlined. These revisions help reduce overall engine weight as well as manufacturing costs.

Another modification resulting in the elimination of parts is the addition of a cooling function to the exhaust gas recirculation system.

Intake and exhaust ports and valves have been revised, too. Valves have been engineered to reduce drops in pressure when they’re open, which helps improve performance. Their design increases tumbling (keeping fuel mixed with air) when closed, which improves fuel efficiency and helps reduce exhaust gas emissions.

The exhaust system features improved tuning. The diameters and lengths of the separate tubes have been modified to improve catalytic converter warm-up (reducing emissions) and to increase power output.

LIGHTWEIGHT COMPONENTS

Among the components designed to weigh less in the FB engine are:

Connecting rods shaped to help keep engine width the same as the EJ while allowing longer stroke
Pistons with a smaller bore, requiring less material and having less reciprocating mass
Wrist pins with smaller diameters, requiring less material

Along with an efficient and compact oil pump, the lightweight components reduce friction loss by approximately 30 percent, improving fuel efficiency and engine response.

CHAIN DRIVE

The double overhead camshafts are driven by chains rather than toothed belts. The chains are maintenance free and do not require replacement, helping to lower the cost of ownership.

The use of chain drive allows smaller sprocket diameters at the crankshaft and camshafts. That helps to keep engine width within convenient dimensions.

FB VERSUS EJ

Compared with the previous non-turbocharged EJ25 engine, the FB25 produces:

The same horsepower, but at lower rpm
Slightly higher torque at lower rpm
Improved fuel economy

That makes the Forester’s new FB SUBARU BOXER engine more responsive, especially at lower engine speeds, while allowing the vehicle to travel farther on the same amount of fuel.

Operation Care Package is an Illinois organization that gathers supplies and letters to send to our troops overseas. This Christmas (December, 2010), they sent out over 11,000 care packages to the troops. Now through October, they will send out approximately 150 packages per week.

“Gary Lang Auto Group wanted to help support our trips by donating funds to this worthwhile organization,” stated Dixie Gilmore, Vice President/General Manager, “Our donation amount was based on every new General Motors vehicle sold the week before Christmas.”

2011 Kia Optima Earns "Top Safety Pick" Award

Kia Motors’ stunning midsize sedan, the 2011 Optima, was named a “Top Safety Pick” this week by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Ratings from the Institute are based on results from front, side and rear impact crash tests and a roof strength test to measure occupant protection in the event of a rollover was added in 2010. Each vehicle’s overall evaluation was based on various measurements specific to each crash angle and overall impact on crash test dummies inside the vehicle at the time of collision.

It's that time of year - we're out traveling to visit friends and family for the holidays. Don't forget about some of your best friends of all - your pets. Pets are family members and their comfort and safety should be considered with each trip you take.

Many owners don’t restrain their pets when traveling in vehicles. Pets, like humans, sustain injuries when unrestrained, and cause injuries to other vehicle passengers. For a small animal, even a sudden stop can result in serious injury or death.

Here are some tips for traveling with your pet:

BEFORE YOU GO
Preparation is an important part of your trip. Within 10 days of your trip to some destinations (particularly when crossing state or international borders), your pet will need a current tag/microchip, a health certificate, and proof of rabies vaccination. Attach your temporary contact information while you’re traveling. For your peace of mind and your pet’s comfort, plan on taking along your pet’s photo, food and water dishes, leash, food, and water.

Before a long trip, ensure your pet is accustomed to riding.

ON THE ROAD

TETHER DEVICES. A harness affords the best protection in extreme situations. Harness devices easily attach to a vehicle’s seatbelt system.

In addition, dogs should not hang out the window, where dirt or debris can injure their eyes, ears, and noses. Also, they should not ride in seats equipped with frontal airbags, which could injure them severely in an accident.

On its way to becoming Automobile Magazine's 2011 Automobile of the Year, the Chevrolet Volt endured more scrutiny and skepticism than any of the nine other semifinalists. From the unprecedented levels of publicity, we knew the Volt as a green-as-grass image builder, but we also couldn't ignore that it's a car built by a historically inconsistent automaker around unproven technology. The foreign aura is furthered by the fact that the Volt has no obvious competition and no real predecessor. It is genuinely an all-new car, in the most simplistic sense as well as in the greater notion that the Volt is unlike any vehicle we have ever driven. No apologies if we were a bit circumspect.

In its metamorphosis from 2007 concept car to 2011 production car, the Volt has gone through a reckoning. 2011 Kia Optima Has Come A Long Way

The 2011 Kia Optima is not your average mid-sized Sedan. As part of a bold new product rollout that began with the Kia Soul, Kia is now delivering compelling vehicles with impressive fuel economy and much improved quality, all wrapped-up in a compelling package.

That’s exactly what Kia wants you to think, showing media present at the launch a short video of the target Gen X customer followed by the cleverly crafted yet arguably true statement that, “Nobody ever dreamed of driving a mid-size sedan until now.”

Based on looks alone, the Optima will draw customers into showrooms, pulling decades-long Honda and Toyota supporters away from their brands with a flashy new look.

FAST FACTS
1. The Optima makes 200-hp from a standard direct-injection 2.4L 4-cylinder, while achieving best-in-class 24/35-mpg (city/hwy) fuel economy.

2. Optional class exclusive features include a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel and heated and cooled front seats.

3. After launch, Kia will introduce a turbocharged model with even more aggressive bodywork and a 274-hp engine.

Based on looks alone, the Optima will draw customers into showrooms, pulling decades-long Honda and Toyota supporters away from their brands with a flashy new look.

And while the Optima is unequivocally svelte, one could easily argue that the biggest drawback to previous generations of Kia’s family sedan wasn’t aesthetics. So… apart from the superficial reasons to purchase this handsome sedan, do the more practical aspects of the 2011 Optima represent a compelling alternative to the industry benchmarks?

In a word: yes.

BIGGER IS BETTER

While we’d certainly argue that when it comes to cars bigger isn’t always better, the wider and longer Optima is now in line with its main competitors delivering added interior space. Rear seat legroom and headroom is plentiful for the second row passengers, although a lower roof section for the middle seat makes it all but useless for anyone but a child. Front seat space isn’t as generous. Even with the seat in its lowest position, taller drivers who don’t feel the need to drive with the seat half reclined will find it cramped with very little in the way of headroom.

The Optima’s increased dimensions have also benefited trunk space, showing that Kia’s dramatic new design language isn’t at the expense of functionality. The trunk holds a cavernous 15.4 cubic feet, although the pass-through space is quite narrow.

DRIVER-ORIENTED INTERIOR DESIGN

With the 2011 Optima, Kia has made big strides forward in the use of cabin materials, while interior layout and design are also strong points. Much like how the exterior conveys a dramatic message, the cockpit has been designed with the driver in mind, with the center console angled towards driver – we could, however, do with a less monotone center stack.

The instrument cluster is simple yet elegant with a nice brightwork surround; the wood detailing on the doors actually looks like high-grade stuff and then there are small touches like moving the automatic transmission gearbox lettering to the driver’s side of the lever, making for a more driver-oriented package. Our EX test model (a mid-level trim and the only one provided at the launch event) also featured a two-tone interior – something that always gives a more high-grade look.

Standard on EX models are items like dual-zone climate control with rear vents, power windows with front auto up/down, an 8-way power drivers seat, leather interior trim (including the center arm rest and the door inserts), a bush-button ignition with Smart Key, rear view camera and the SYNC-style UVO system for hands-free use of the entertainment and communications systems. Also included is a leather-wrapped steering wheel, although judging from the feel, it would seem the folks at Kia may have skinned a plastic cow.

LUXURIOUS CLASS-EXCLUSIVE FEATURES

Upgrading to the Premium Package adds items like wood interior trim, heated rear seats, a driver’s memory seat with 4-way adjustability, and class-exclusive features like heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel and a panoramic sunroof – which might be the reason why headroom is so limited. A Technology Package then allows you to add Navigation and an impressive 8-speaker Infinity audio system that, as the folks from infinity showed us, can really pump out Sandstorm by Darude.

While not as fancy, even base models come well-equipped with items like driver’s power lumbar support, power windows and locks, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, a cooling glovebox, USB and Auxiliary jacks and Bluetooth compatibility with steering wheel controls. Plus, the addition of the automatic transmission adds cruise control and an Eco mode that upshifts sooner and downshifts later to improve fuel economy.

Those looking for more, like HID headlights, LED taillights, added power and an even more aggressive design will be able to get it later after the initial vehicle launches with the introduction of a turbocharged model in EX and a higher-grade SX trim.

SOLID RIDE WITH POWER TO SPARE AND EXCELLENT FUEL ECONOMY

In terms of driving characteristics, the Optima is very much in keeping with the Hyundai Sonata, which shares the same platform. The cabin is quiet and the drive is smooth, with the Optima feeling substantial (though not big) out on the road.

Handling is good for the mid-size sedan crowd. EX models benefit from larger 17-inch alloy wheels and wider 215 tires, although the low-budget Nexen rubber doesn’t do much to aid in cornering. Steering feel is generally good and is weighted quite heavily, although, like the Sonata, the electric power steering system is initially vague, with a split-second delay (or about an inch of movement) where there’s very little response.

Power is more than adequate, with 200 ponies standard from the direct-injection 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. Importantly, this isn’t some strung-out torqueless four-banger either with a total of 186 ft-lbs available at 4500 rpm. Combined with either a six-speed manual (base trim LX models only), or a 6-speed automatic the new powerplant is both efficient and capable, delivering some of the best acceleration in its class (thanks to having the most power of its competitors) while also delivering fuel economy numbers that tie its Sonata sibling with best-in-class fuel economy of 24/35-mpg (city/hwy). And better yet, those numbers are actually achievable in real-world driving.

Another big reason for the notable acceleration and fuel economy is how light the Optima is with a 3,200 lb cub weight. And yet what’s so surprising is how solid it feels on the road.

2011 Chevy Volt: Motor Trend's Car of the Year

Motor Trend Magazine named the Chevy Volt the 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year.

"We expected a science experiment, but this is a moon shot," Motor Trend editors wrote for the January, 2011 edition. "The Volt delivers on the promise of the vehicle concept as originally outlined by GM, combining the smooth, silent, efficient, low-emissions capability of an electric motor with the range and flexibility of an internal combustion engine. It is a full functional, no-compromise compact automobile that offers consumers real benefits in terms of lower running costs."

The Volt's groundbreaking propulsion system provide many of those benefits. The Volt is the world's first electric vehicle with extended range capability. The Volt has a total driving range of 350 miles. During the first 25-50 miles, the Volt drives gas and tailpipe emissions free, using electricity stored in it battery. Kia Motors Expanding NBA Partnership

Kia Motors America recently extended and expanded the company’s marketing partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA) through a new multiyear agreement. Kia is returning as the Official Automotive Partner of the NBA, and is now also the Official Automotive Partner of the NBA All-Star, an Official Automotive Partner of NBA Cares, and the title partner of the Kia NBA All-Star MVP award.

In addition, the brand will become title partner of Kia NBA Tip-Off and the Kia NBA Performance Awards. Kia Motors will be prominently featured throughout Kia NBA Tip-Off ‘10 via media, promotions, and local and national NBA game broadcasts. Kia NBA Tip-Off will be promoted via tagged NBA brand spots, courtside signage and social media integration. Kia and the NBA launched a countdown clock on NBA.com and have created a tip-off hash tag (#KiaTipOff10) on Twitter.

Gary Lang Auto Group's Ground Breaking Ceremony

Gary Lang Auto Group "officially" broke ground today for the new import dealership. This new state-of-the-art facility will be the new home for the Kia, Mitsubishi, Mahindra and other possible makes.

The dealership will be over 26,000 square feet and located just south of the current dealerships on Route 31, between Crystal Lake and McHenry. Approximately 30 to 50 new jobs will be created because of this. The estimated completion date is April, 2011.

SUBARU CORE TECHNOLOGY

2011 Subaru Forester Product Review

For 2011, Subaru improves on the excellent combination of Subaru Core Technology, versatile interior, and efficient drivetrain found in the Forester. Exterior details, interior electronics, and a completely new engine design highlight the changes.

Touring models now top the Forester lineup, and they build on the Forester 2.5X Limited (non-turbocharged) and the 2.5XT Premium (turbocharged). Standard equipment for Touring models include 4-speed electronic direct-control automatic transmissions, the All-Weather Package (heated exterior mirrors, heated front seats, and windshield wiper de-icer), electroluminescent instrumentation, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, cargo-area tray, High Intensity Discharge (HID) low-beam headlights, panoramic power moonroof, and more.

EXTERIOR

Outside, all Forester models receive a new grille. In addition, Touring models have exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals as well as silver-finished roof rails. XT models receive a redesigned rear spoiler.

INTERIOR

Inside, minor color and material changes help to make Forester more comfortable. The dash panel is now a textured soft shell, and steering wheel control switches have gone from silver to black for improved visibility.

Plus, in Touring models, levers in the cargo area control a rear seatback folding feature, allowing users to lower the rear seatbacks from the rear gate opening.

But electronics are the big story inside the 2011 Forester. For example, Bluetooth^®1 is standard on all but the 2.5X. New audio systems are standard on Premium, Limited, and Touring models. A rear vision camera is standard with this system on Touring models and available as an accessory on the 2.5X Limited.

Plus, an optional TomTom^®2 navigation system for the 2.5X Premium includes a removable 4.3-inch touch-screen portable device. (See the 2011 Product Preview for Parts and Accessories below for more on the TomTom navigation system.)

Also, HD Radio™ technology is available for Limited and Touring models.

MECHANICAL

In non-turbocharged models, a new engine (designated FB25) sits under the hood. It has the first completely new design from Subaru in 20 years.

Subaru had a number of goals for FB25, including improved fuel economy and higher performance, especially at low engine speeds (low-end torque). Major differences between the FB25 and the EJ25 (which remains the engine of choice for turbocharged Forester models) include:

Smaller bore and longer stroke
Slightly higher displacement
Chain-driven double-overhead camshafts instead of belt-driven single-overhead camshafts

Compared with the previous non-turbocharged EJ25 engine, the FB25 produces:

Same horsepower, but at lower rpm
Slightly higher torque at lower rpm
Improved fuel economy

We Still Need Cellphones for Soldiers

I just took a couple boxes of cell phones to the post office today for our "Cell Phones for Soliders" promotion. This promotion is still going on and we have a drop off box in the showroom.

This program is designed to provide our soldiers overseas with an opportunity to phone home and talk to loved ones from far away. Everyone has felt the emotional need to hear a loved one’s voice while away. Soldiers are always welcome to call home, but the calls are expensive for families. The Cell Phones for Soldiers program provides a means for soldiers to contact their friends and families for free. For every cell phone donated to the program, a soldier will receive a 60-minute calling card.

Please bring in your unwanted cell phones in and drop them off for this great cause.
